Clear Custom Packaging to Display your Hero Product

Introduction

Hey, we’re breaking down into the world’s best packaging. Think about your hero product right now that you have or the product you’re going to create for a second. Right, you’ve got this beautiful product you want to display and share with everyone in the world. And sometimes we just want to create awesome packaging for it, but we don’t want to hide it too because it’s that cool.

So in today’s blog, I’m going to discuss an innovative idea for the design of custom packaging to create a shout-out for your brand.

Overview

Let me share with you how and why you should consider doing a museum presentation methodology in your custom packaging. I will also be sharing the structural engineering behind this box. The box was first used by Ernie Ball. You will be able to learn some of the design principles and for now, I’m going to get you into the strategy about why to create this kind of designed box. As always I will share the cost of manufacturing it so if you want to build something just like it literally you could build it.

Museum presentation

What does this mean exactly? Why would you ever consider this for your packaging?

For that beautiful hero product, something that Ernie Ball created was the gold-plated foot pedal for electric guitars. This is ambient delay, so they wanted this beautiful product on display.

Rather than covering it all up. So they built a museum display around it.

They used actual PET plastic, which is much more cost-effective. You could do an acrylic, a polycarbonate, or a blend of different plastics. We did a PET plastic that houses right over the front of this foot pedal here.

Heavy product

Sometimes photography doesn’t do it justice on the outside of a package. So if the product is over two pounds, and you have an odd-shaped or heavy product, you’ll want to work with a packaging structural engineer.

We have a team of those here at the custom packaging that worked on this box in particular. We tried to achieve that maximal level of display while ensuring it ships well and is protected inside. Furthermore, we used a double-thick rigid base with a really nice matte finish and PET plastic. When considering building something similar for your company, you need to look at the track record of a packaging engineering firm. Designers are talented, but packaging requires working with a CAD designer or packaging engineer who understands what it takes to ship, protect, and tie in the product while maintaining a simple, seamless unboxing experience.

Design principles for your business

The box has a sleeve with brand messaging on the outside. You can also print the stuff right on the plastic. It creates a really nice reveal, allowing the package to display beautifully on the shelf, and giving a museum presentation.

When considering packaging, study your competition. With Ernie Ball, most of their competition used corrugated cardboard boxes, so we went in a different direction. We created a presentation that draws the shopper into the product. It allows to merchandise well on its own.

For selling on Amazon

If you’re selling on your e-commerce website or Amazon, the handful of images on the left side of your product page are your merchandising.

Is your packaging enhancing or detracting from that? Understanding the strategy and who you’re selling against is crucial.

Packaging controls

We built controls into the artwork to perfectly match the product colors and ensure the type is readable against the black. We created swatches with different parts of the renderings to test printing over the metallic paper, allowing us to pick the perfect color mix for mass production.

Queries about the cost of custom packaging

How much does a box like this cost to manufacture? If one of our factories overseas were doing something like this all in, it would be $3.10. The PET cover is 45 cents, the double thick rigid base is $2.10, and the sleeve with mirrored metallic paper, soft touch coating, and spot UV is 55 cents.

If you have a beautiful product and want to wrap it up, consider this museum presentation methodology. Make sure you hire a great structural engineer and have a solid design strategy behind your packaging, keeping the costs within that three-dollar mark.

Conclusion

Creative packaging can truly transform your brand. By using clear custom packaging to showcase your hero product, you can make it stand out like a museum piece. This method, first used by Ernie Ball, involves using cost-effective PET plastic to display products beautifully while keeping them protected. Working with packaging engineers ensures your product is both well-presented and safely shipped. With thoughtful design principles and strategic planning, your packaging can captivate customers and enhance your brand’s image, all while staying within budget.
