Scientists from Newcastle University performed the below experiment tests.

1) Objectives:

Weight Loss is associated with a decrease in total and resting Energy Expenditure. The aim is to investigate whether (1) diets with different rate and extent of Weight Loss determined different changes in total and resting Energy Expenditure and if (2) they influenced the level of adaptive thermogenesis, defined as the decline in total or resting Energy Expenditure not accounted by changes in body composition.

2) Method:

Three groups of six, obese men in total will fast for 6 days to achieve a 5% Weight Loss. Through a Very Low-Calorie Diet (2.5 MJ/day) for 3 weeks and a Low-Calorie Diet (5.2 MJ/day) diet for 6 weeks to achieve a 10% Weight Loss. A four-component model will be used to measure body composition. Indirect calorimetry will be used to measure resting Energy Expenditure. Total Energy Expenditure will be measured by doubly labelled water for Very Low-Calorie Diet and Low-Calorie diet, and 24-hour whole-body calorimetry (fasting).

3) Results:

Three groups of overweight men were put on a diet. The 1st Group had it the toughest. They followed an extreme diet just for six days. The 2nd Group followed a slightly easier low diet for 3 weeks. The 3rd Group followed an even easier re-reduced calorie diet for 6 weeks.

All groups ended up losing approximately 5% of their bodyweight. (About 10 pounds). The difference is how long it took. The 1st Group lost the 10 pounds in just did 6 days! The 2nd Group did it in 3 weeks. The 3rd Group did it in 6 weeks.

Very Low-Calorie Diet and Low-Calorie Diet showed a similar degree of metabolic adaptation for total Energy Expenditure (Very Low-Calorie = − 6.2%; Low-Calorie = − 6.8%). Metabolic adaptation for resting Energy Expenditure was greater in the LCD (− 0.4 MJ/day, − 5.3%) compared to the Very Low-Calorie Diet (− 0.1 MJ/day, − 1.4%) group. Resting Energy Expenditure did not decrease after short-term fasting and no evidence of adaptive thermogenesis (+ 0.4 MJ/day) was found after 5% Weight Loss. The rate of Weight Loss was inversely associated with changes in resting Energy Expenditure (n = 30, r = 0.− 42, p = 0.01).

4) Conclusions:

The rate of Weight Loss did not appear to influence the decline in total Energy Expenditure in obese men after 10% Weight Loss. Approximately 6% of this decline in total Energy Expenditure was explained by mechanisms of adaptive thermogenesis.

The resting metabolism dropped the MOST in the 6 weeks diet group. The 3 weeks diet group saw the 2nd biggest drop in resting metabolism. And the 6-day “extreme diet group” saw the SMALLEST drop in resting metabolism. Therefore, losing fat slowly is horrible for your metabolism.
