Democracy is a system of government where the people have the right to choose their leaders through elections. One of the main characteristics of democracy is the periodic conduct of elections. In Indonesia, elections are the political mechanism for the people to elect the president and vice president, as well as legislative members at the national, provincial, and regency/city levels. Elections are held every five years, in accordance with the provisions in the 1945 Constitution. Besides elections, there are also regional elections (Pilkada) conducted to elect regional heads at the provincial and regency levels.
